Shields Furniture Store, 103 W Elm Street

William and Elizabeth Shields, builders of this store, were born in Scotland, immigrated to America in 1872, and settled in Glen Rose in 1880, only two years after the town site was laid out. Soon thereafter they built their first store at this site, a wooden structure where they combined furniture, hardware, and mortuary undertaking. At some date after a tornado swept away the building in 1902, the Shields family constructed this handsome cut limestone store, where they continued to conduct business until 1931. R.T. Ratliff’s Clover Farm Store then sold general supplies to farmers and ranchers over two decades, being followed by eating places, a coffee bar, and a specialty gift shop. The high concrete sidewalk in front made it easier to move furniture and caskets in the early days.
