Hamill’s Grocery, 103 Vernon Street

Hamill’s Grocery is the only building on the Glen Rose courthouse square with walls assembled solely from concrete blocks, and as such it exemplifies budget-conscious construction of the 1940s. Groceryman Burnet Wadle Hamill operated a food store in this simple rectangular structure at least as early as 1940 and continued into the 1950s. He advertised it as the place in Glen Rose for “Good Groceries, Fresh Meats, {and} Saving Prices.” An original flat roof leaked so badly that the present low gable roof was added to solve the problem. After competition from larger stores forced the family-run grocery store to close, the modest building housed a Radio Shack consumer electronics store and the offices of a surveying and mapping firm.
